U.S. Home Remodeling Market Remains Active, Bathroom Cabinet Upgrades a Hit

Driven by aesthetic and functional needs, homeowners are doubling down on bathroom remodeling and, increasingly, bathroom cabinets are getting more attention in the mix, according to the Houzz Bathroom Trends in the U.S. 2022 Study, published by Houzz, the U.S. home remodeling and design platform. The study is a survey of more than 2,500 homeowners who are in the process of, planning, or have recently completed a bathroom renovation. Economist Marine Sargsyan said, “Bathrooms have always been the top area people remodel when renovating their homes. Driven by aesthetic and functional needs, homeowners are exponentially increasing their investment in this privatized, solitary space.” Sargsyan added: “Despite an increase in the cost of products and materials due to inflation and supply chain disruptions, home refurbishment activity remains very buoyant due to the limited supply of housing, high house prices and the desire of homeowners to maintain their original living situation. The survey found that more than three-quarters of homeowners surveyed (76%) upgraded their bathroom cabinets during a bathroom renovation. Bathroom cabinets are one of the few things that can brighten up an area and therefore become the visual focal point of the entire bathroom. 30% of homeowners surveyed chose log cabinets, followed by gray (14%), blue (7%), black (5%) and green (2%).

Three out of five homeowners chose to opt for custom or semi-custom bathroom cabinets.

According to the Houzz survey, 62 percent of home renovation projects involve bathroom upgrades, a figure that’s up 3 percentage points from last year. Meanwhile, more than 20 percent of homeowners expanded the size of their bathroom during a remodel.

Bathroom cabinet selection and design also shows diversity: synthetic quartzite is the preferred countertop material (40 percent), followed by natural stone such as quartzite (19 percent), marble (18 percent) and granite (16 percent).

Transitional styles: Outdated styles are the primary reason homeowners choose to renovate their bathrooms, with nearly 90% of homeowners choosing to change the style of their bathroom when remodeling. Transitional styles that blend traditional and modern styles dominate, followed by modern and contemporary styles.

Going with tech: Nearly two-fifths of homeowners have added high-tech elements to their bathrooms, with a significant increase in bidets, self-cleaning elements, heated seats and built-in nightlights.

Solid Colors: White continues to be the dominant color for master bathroom vanities, countertops and walls, with gray walls popular on both inside and outside bathroom walls, and blue exteriors chosen by 10 percent of homeowners for their showers. As multi-colored countertops and shower walls decline in popularity, bathroom upgrades are shifting toward a solid color style.

SHOWER UPGRADE: Shower upgrades are becoming more common in bathroom renovations (84 percent). After removing a bathtub, nearly four out of five homeowners upsize the shower, usually by 25 percent. In the past year, more homeowners have upgraded their showers after removing the tub.

Greenery: more homeowners (35%) are adding greenery to their bathrooms when remodeling, up 3 percentage points from last year. The vast majority of those surveyed believe it makes the bathroom more aesthetically pleasing, and a few believe greenery creates a calming atmosphere in the bathroom. In addition, some greenery has air-purifying, odor-fighting abilities and antibacterial properties.
