U.S. Bathroom Trend Report: Smart Toilets, Customized Bathroom Cabinets, Water-Saving Faucets Continue to Sizzle

HOUZZ, a U.S. home services website, releases an annual study of U.S. bathroom trends, and recently, the 2021 edition of the report finally came out. This year, the U.S. homeowners renovate the bathroom when the behavioral trends largely continued last year, smart toilets, water-saving faucets, custom bathroom cabinets, showers, bathroom mirrors and other products are still popular, and the overall style of renovation is not very different from last year. However, this year there are also some consumer characteristics worthy of attention, for example, more and more people in the renovation of the bathroom to take into account the needs of the elderly and even pets, which is also the mainreason why many companies have set foot in the relevant areas in recent years.

According to the report, of the bathroom fixture renovations, more than 80 percent of respondents replaced faucets, floors, walls, lighting, showers, and countertops, which is about the same as last year. Those who replaced sinks also reached 77 percent, three percentage points higher than last year. In addition, 65 percent of respondents also replaced their toilets.

In recent years, there has been a trend in European and American households to replace bathtubs with showers. In this survey report, on the question of what to do with the bathtub after renovating the bathroom, 24% of the respondents said they had removed the bathtub. And among such respondents, 84% said they had replaced their bathtubs with showers, an increase of 6 percentage points from last year.

In terms of bathroom cabinet choices, the majority of respondents preferred customized products, at 34 percent, while another 22 percent of homeowners preferred semi-customized products, reflecting the fact that bathroom cabinets with customized elements are the most popular among U.S. users. In addition, there are still many respondents who choose to use mass-produced products, which accounted for 28% of respondents.

Of this year’s respondents, 78 percent said they replaced their mirrors with new ones for their bathrooms. Of this group, more than half installed more than one mirror, with some upgraded mirrors offering more advanced features. In addition, 20 percent of homeowners who replaced their mirrors chose products equipped with LED lights and 18 percent chose products equipped with anti-fog features, with the latter percentage up 4 percentage points from last year.
